South Australia's Popular Place (Clare valley)

Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend, Clare Valley, Sa: Throughout the year the Clare Valley stages many events from classic country shows to gourmet food and wine festivals. At the annual Clare Valley gourmet Weekend in May you can be the first to sample the year's vintage before the winemaking process is complete a rare privilege usually reserved for the wine maker. The Clare Vally is approximately 75 miles north of Adelaide.

Between the Clare and Barossa Valleys you will find Kapunda a small country town with a rich and interesting history. The Kapunda Heritage Trail meanders through the town where you can see some of the town's historic places buildings and stories of the early pioneers. The gorges of Red Banks Conservation Park near Burra are steeped in Aboriginal history and home to abundant wildlife.

The Clare Valley Riesling Trail runs for 22 miles between Auburn and Clare and passes through all the major towns of the Clare Valley including Leasingham Watervale Penwortham and Sevenhill. The trail can be cycled in under three hours and connects many of the region's major attractions cellar doorsoffer home grown seasonal produce restaurant dining and tapas style feasts. The Riesling Trail is part of one of Australia' s premier long distance cycling trails the 497 mile long Mawson Trail which traverses the Mount Lofty and Finders Ranges. The Clare Valley is one of Australia's oldest wine regions. It is best known for its Riesling wine and is often called the home of Australian Riesling. Its Mediterranean style climate is ideal for the production of quality Riesling Chardonnay Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon Semillon and Merlot grapes.
